The low-flying National Enquirer ginned up the story about Selena’s Brad Pitt connection.
But the tabloid’s credibility is so low, especially on Brangelina stories, that its latest claims seem as far-fetched as literally dozens of other stories about the couple that proved to be untrue.
That hasn’t stopped a slew of other low-flying tabloids from running with the story, even though the source is highly suspect. Selena is a natural target of click bait no matter what she does.
Two years ago, Gomez, 24, was subjected to similar rumors when she was spotted in LAX airport at the same time as actor Orlando Bloom. Both were on their way to the same event, “We Day” in Canada.
Tabloids ran wild with reports that she and Bloom were an item, based solely on paparazzi photos. But the rumors never panned out.
They hardly seem like a pair. Bloom is 15 years her senior. But that hardly curbed speculation.
And tabloids failed to report that Selena pal, Alfredo Flores, best known for his appearance in “Lord of the Rings,” was escorting her at the time.
Likewise, Pitt, 52, is almost twice Selena’s age.
Now, another photo is the source of all the speculation. Gomez posted it on Instagram way back in January. It shows her sitting and talking with Pitt at the Golden Globes ceremony.
Selena had a small part in Pitt’s 2015 movie, “The Big Short.” She has said in the past she admires him as an actor and thinks he’s a hunk.
During an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, she also joked about meeting Pitt in her dressing room at a 2013 MTV Awards show.
The Enquirer used that to extrapolate that Jolie flew into a jealous rage over their “flirtation” and ordered him never to appear in a movie with her again.
Brad’s so-called “flirtations” supposedly became a sore spot in the marriage leading to their divorce. But there isn’t any proof of that outside of the tabloid’s usual anonymous “source.”
In fact, Jolie more than anyone, would be unlikely to get jealous over other women swooning for her husband. She knows how popular he is, and from her own life and acting career, how looks are never what they seem.
This week, French actress Marion Cotillard, Pitt’s co-star in their upcoming movie, was the subject of similar rumors from another low-flying tabloid.
The New York Post’s often inaccurate column, “Page Six,” reported that Angelina dumped Brad after learning he had cheated on her with Cotillard on the set of their World War II movie “Allied.”
But those rumors were quickly shot down. Tabloids began walking back the claims today (Sept. 21)
Now, instead of having an affair, the tabs have fallen back on the old canard that Jolie was insanely jealous of the 40-year-old French star.
But the fact remains, the most plausible reason for the divorce is the one being offered by Jolie’s lawyers. The couple has career and parenting differences that make it impossible for them to remain together.
The rest is pure hype.
