Scott Michael Greene, 46, meekly surrendered to an Iowa Department of Natural Resources officer this morning in the wake of a statewide manhunt.
He allegedly ambushed and killed Urbandale police officer Justin Martin, 24, and Des Moines police Sgt. Anthony ‘Tony’ Beminio, 38, early Wednesday (Nov. 2) morning.
Police believe the shootings are tied to an incident two weeks ago that Greene recorded and posted on YouTube.
It showed police officers ejecting him from an Urbandale High School football game for waving a Confederate flag in the faces of African-American football fans.
“I was offended by the blacks sitting through our anthem. Thousands more whites fought and died for their freedom. However this is not about the Armed forces, they are cop haters,” he wrote.
“This is an assault on a person exercising his constitution rights on free speech!” he wrote in the description. He later claimed “African-American people” assaulted him and stole his flag.
Greene’s protests are similar to white supremacists and far-right extremists who believe in an extreme interpretation of the U.S Constitution.
Neighbors told The Des Moines Register Greene put a Donald Trump campaign sign on his lawn about two weeks ago.
Martin was killed outside the stadium, according to The Register. The officers were shot about 20 minutes apart in the unprovoked assault.
“It doesn’t look like there was any interaction between these officers and whoever the coward is who shot them while they sat in their cars,” Des Moines Police Sgt. Paul Parizek said at a news conference.
Greene has had several run-ins with police and several arrests over the past six years. Some incidents have involved confrontations with African-Americans.
Records show arrests for harassment, interfering with an official, assault, criminal mischief and domestic assault. He filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in 2007, according to media reports.
Daughter Sammie Greene, one of three children, posted a note on Facebook this morning asking for prayers for her father.
“He was also a loving father grandfather and the greatest man I know. He was very very sick mentally,” she wrote.
