Best of all, Kimmel revealed a “commercial” that captures the inanity of the incident.
“We’ll beat you so badly you’ll be using your own face as a flotation device,” a flight attendant says in the ad.
Kimmel had more than a few choice words for United CEO Oscar Munoz, who compounded the public relations nightmare with his non-apology apology.
Munoz issued the statement via Twitter calling the forced ejection of the passenger a “reaccomodation,” adding new meaning to the word.
“This might be the worst part of it,” said Kimmel in his opening monologue last night on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”
“I don’t know how the guy who sent that tweet didn’t vomit when he typed it out,” he added.
The incident unfolded when United announced to the full plane that it had been overbooked by four passengers.
It asked for volunteers to deplane and eventually offered $800 and an overnight hotel stay as an incentive.
But no one one volunteered.
So flight attendants picked four passengers at random and told them to get off. One of the four, who claimed to be a doctor, refused.
That’s when security was called. They dragged the man down the aisle on his back as other passengers screamed in horror.
Still others smartly videoed the scene on their phones and posted it online.
So why was there so much fuss? The airline, it turns out, wanted the four seats for its own employees.
“Can you imagine this happening in any other industry?” Kimmel asked. “Imagine if this happened at Applebys.”
