Lorde debuted a more sensuous sound with songs off her new album, Melodrama at the Coachella festival. The break-up inspired tunes conjured up Taylor Swift, but had enough indie-rock edge to keep the New Zealand singer’s integrity intact.
Lorde looked every inch the sultry chanteuse in a strapless black sequined pantsuit, but didn’t back off of her signature high-energy performance.
Her album, due out this summer, was heavily influenced by her failed relationship with James Lowe, a New Zealand photographer and long-time boyfriend.
“It was my first major heartbreak,” she said in a recent interview. “It’s not something that I really am used to writing about. It took me a while to be able to figure out how to write about that.”
Lorde, real name is Ella Yelich-O’Connor, scored a huge breakout in 2012 with her offbeat, indie-rock tune “Royals.” It hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and held that spot for nine consecutive weeks.
That led to a major record deal and her first album Pure Heroine. The album peaked at No. 3 on Billboard’s album, and was a certified platinum hit with 1.3 million sales.
Like most sophomore albums, Melodrama will have a slightly more targeted commercial sound. But rest assured, Lorde hasn’t sold out to the pop gods.
