Colbert was reacting to Trump’s dismissive behavior toward CBS anchor John Dickerson.
Trump abruptly cut off an interview and motioned Dickerson to leave the Oval Office.
Dickerson had tried to question the president about his now widely discredited claims that President Obama wiretapped Trump Tower during the election.
Colbert responded with a biting comedy riff that included a number of insults, including this one: “The only thing your mouth is good for is being Vladimir Putin’s cock holster.”
Trump supporters flooded social media with demands for Colbert’s firing and floated the hash tag #FireColbert. Some claimed his remark was not only insulting to Trump, but also homophobic.
Still others called for an advertiser boycott.
Despite the initial furor, the campaign quickly fell flat. No companies have pulled advertising, and, as Colbert noted, he’s still host.
“Still? Am I still the host?” Colbert asked, before declaring: “I’m still the host!”
But he also added a clear “non-apology” apology.
“Now, folks, if you saw my monologue on Monday, you know I was a little upset with Donald Trump for insulting a friend of mine. So, at the end of that monologue I had a few choice insults for the president in return. I don’t regret that. I believe he can take care of himself. I have jokes, he has launch codes. So, it’s a fair fight. So while I would do it again, I would change a few words that were cruder than they needed to be. Now I’m not going to repeat the phrase, but life is short. Anyone who expresses their love for another person in their own way is to me, an American hero. And I think we can all agree on that.”
Colbert smoothly segued to the real subject of his monologue. FBI Director James Comey, whom he described as “the real reason we have Donald Trump.”
Comey appeared on Capitol Hill yesterday to face questions from the Senate Intelligence Committee. Colbert wasted little time showing that he’s not pulling any punches.
Colbert’s critics tried to draw comparisons to the so-called “liberal uproar” that caused advertisers to flee Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly and led to his departure from the network.
O’Reilly was accused by multiple women of sexual assault or sexual harassment. Colbert is a comedian who was telling a joke.
