Cara Delevingne’s new film, “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets,” will provide a key test whether the model-turned-actress is a box office draw in a lead role in the United States. A new trailer, released today, shows off her acting chops.

The UK model and socialite has been hell-bent on launching an acting career since she debuted on the big screen in the 2012 film “Anna Karenina.”

She had a small role as Princess Sorokina in the off-beat take on Tolstoy’s Russian classic. The movie starred Keira Knightley and Jude Law.

Her breakout as a lead actress came in the 2015 indie romantic comedy “Paper Towns.” The film was a success with an $85.5 million gross against a $12 million production budget. But most of the money came from overseas.

The film only grossed $32 million domestically after its release date was bounced around three different times by 20th Century Fox.

Her next effort, a coming-of-age British romantic comedy, “Kids in Love,” went straight to video and was not released in the United States.

Delevingne’s best outing to date has been the ensemble super hero movie “Suicide Squad.” She played June Moone, aka Enchantress. But top billing in the film went to Will Smith, Jude Law and Margo Robbie.

In “Valerian,” a French science fiction action-adventure film, she’s the lead actress opposite Dane Dehaan. She plays another superhero, Laureline, a space-and-time-traveling agent and partner of DeHaan’s Valerian.

Dehaan is a relatively unknown American actor whose biggest role was opposite Robert Pattinson in the 2015 movie “Life” about actor James Dean.

Rianna, another wannabe actress, and Ethan Hawke also appear in “Valerian.”

The trailer is heavy on Star Wars-style CGI and special effects down to a supporting cast of space oddities and monsters. Valerian and Laureline are sent on various missions to head off all kinds of threats to the City of a Thousand Planets.

The film should do well in Europe. Directed by Luc Besson, it’s based on the popular French science fiction graphic comics series “Valérian and Laureline.”

Delevingne says she hopes to pattern her acting career after Charlize Theron, another model-turned-actress, who is now a major star.

Check out Cara in the latest, and last, trailer before the film is released on July 21 in the heart of summer blockbuster season.
