Madonna has never shied away from sadomasochism in her music videos, but that doesn’t mean she’s a bully. It’s sex! The Material Girl told Ellen DeGeneres today (Nov. 9) that she’s against the kind of bullying that has surfaced recently and resulted in several teen suicides.
“I’m incredibly disturbed and saddened by the overwhelming number of teen suicides that have been reported lately because of bullying,” she said.
“Suicide in general is disturbing, but to hear that teenagers are taking their lives because they are being bullied in schools and dormitories, what you have is kind of unfathomable,” she added.
Madonna was particularly upset by the upsurge in hate toward gays, and says she has discussed the subject with daughter Lourdes.
“We talk a lot about the importance of not judging people who are different,” she said. “Not judging people who don’t fit into our expected view of what’s cool and what isn’t. Think about it across the board.”
She drew on her own experience growing up in New York.
“I never felt like I fit in at school,” she said. “I wasn’t a jock, I wasn’t an intellectual. There was never a group I felt like I fit in with. I was a weirdo,” she said.
In the end, Madonna said the burden falls on parents to speak to their children about the problem.
