Millie Bobby Brown is letting fame go to her head and growing up way too fast, putting her in “extreme danger,” warns “Stranger Things” co-star David Harbour. She needs protection now!
Brown, who is just 13, is the breakout star of the hit Netflix supernatural series.
She’s rocketed to stardom after just two seasons.
“She is in the cross-hairs of something extremely dangerous that nobody seems to be paying attention to,” Harbour told London’s Daily Mail.
“I think the developing mind of someone who gets this famous and has still a brain that is not fully developed is an extremely difficult thing to navigate, and I hope that she gets the help that she needs,” he added.
Brown’s portrayal of Eleven, a girl with telekinetic powers, has earned her a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.
Harbour fears she’s getting caught up in a tabloid and social media whirl that’s putting her at a “career crossroads” at the tender age of 13.
Harbour told the British tabloid Brown is facing many “potential pitfalls.” For one, he believes she’s consumed by getting “likes” on social media rather than living her life and growing as an actress.
“I think that the pitfalls are very deep in terms of this generation, this fame, this Instagram generation of constantly wanting to get likes,” he said.
Brown has garnered more than 12 million Instagram followers in the two years since the Netflix series launched.
“Someone with 11 million followers thinking about their persona to the world at 13, 14 years of age is terrifying to me,” he added.
Indeed, she seems to be growing up fast.
She’s posed for a number of provocative photos that sexualize her beyond her years.
She’s also reportedly in a hot and heavy relationship with 15-year-old singer Jacob Sartorius, which has upset some of her fans.
“What is healthy is being in a group of boys and girls and transitioning from same-sex-only groups into groups in contact with the other sex,” says Jennifer Connolly, PhD, Director of the LaMarsh Centre for Research on Violence and Conflict Resolution at York University in Britain.
Ironically, Harbour plays police chief Jim Hopper in “Stranger Things.” He takes Eleven under his wing after she escapes from a top secret lab.
“I know that I try to protect her as much as I can but my hope with Millie and my focus with her is always that I want her to be an artist who, when I’m in the nursing home, she’ll bring me her Oscars,” he said.
“I do think that she requires an amount of protection that I don’t know if she will be given, but we’ll see,” Harbour added.
It’s easy to become overwhelmed by the hype, which can in turn effect your growth as an actor, he explained.
“I do want her to become Meryl Streep, I do want her to become Daniel Day Lewis, I do want her to become Philip Seymour Hoffman,” he said.
Wait a minute. Hoffman might not be the best role model; he died of a drug overdose.
