Brandy sobbed openly as she was voted off ABC’s Dancing With the Stars in a major shock that saw Bristol Palin advance to the contest finals. The result raises fundamental questions about fairness in more ways than one.
Jennifer Grey, 50, and Derek Hough, Kyle Massey, 19, and Lacey Schwimmer and Palin, 20 and Mark Ballas, will vie for the mirror ball trophy next week in the live final.
Brandy, 31, could not hide her shock or disappointment after she and partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy were eliminated by public vote.
Throughout the season they have consistently scored higher than Palin and Ballas.
The development raises two fundamental flaws in the show’s premise that hopefully will cause ABC to rethink the format before another outrage erupts next season.
First, the show shouldn’t match virtually professional dancers, such as Brandy and current leader Jennifer Grey against “celebrities” with no dancing experience, such as Palin and quarterback Kurt Warner.
It’s patently unfair and often painful to watch.
Second, the show does not reward the best dancers by advancing them in the competition as it should.
To watch contestants like Palin and last season Kate Gosselin advance over far more qualified contestants is infuriating, whether the public is voting or not.
Obviously, it becomes a popularity contest, and the contestant with the biggest fan base has an advantage over more worthy competitors.
Bristol has shown, grit, determination and much improvement during the show, and she has performed commendably.
But her dancing is still now where close to the level of Brandy, Grey or even Massey.
Hough also couldn’t hide his shock.
“People vote and their voices count, and I love the fact that the show represents that,” Chmerkovskiy, who had criticized Palin’s dancing skills said in a show of class.
Brandy, however, appeared heartbroken. She worked equally hard and turned in outstanding performances.
“I don’t know how to feel right now. It hasn’t processed yet for me,” she said.
It likely hasn’t processed for a lot of fans either.
Brandy and Chmerkovskiy were gracious later in an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel. See Below
