Samantha Bee, the acerbic late-night talk show host has been caught up in the television culture war. Right-wingers, led by the White House, attacked her for ““vile and vicious” language after she called Ivanka Trump a “feckless cunt.”
“The collective silence by the left and its media allies is appalling,” White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee-Sanders said in a statement to The Wrap.
“Her disgusting comments and show are not fit for broadcast, and executives at Time Warner and TBS must demonstrate that such explicit profanity about female members of this administration will not be condoned on its network.”
The TBS cable network airs her show, “Full Frontal,” a satirical look at news and current events, often through Bee’s profanity-laced commentaries. Bee apologized in a statement released today.
“I would like to sincerely apologize to Ivanka Trump and to my viewers for using an expletive on my show to describe her last night. It was inappropriate and inexcusable. I crossed a line, and I deeply regret it.”
Bee slammed Ivanka during a segment blasting her for failing to talk some sense into her father Donald Trump over the administration’s immigration policies.
“Let me just say, one mother to another, do something about your dad’s immigration practices, you feckless cunt! He listens to you. Put on something tight and low-cut and tell your father to fucking stop it. Tell him it was an Obama thing and see how it goes.”
Social media erupted in comments pro and con. Critics claiming a double standard exists in the wake of ABC’s decision to cancel Roseanne Barr’s show after she made racist tweets about former Obama aide Valerie Jarrett.
Meanwhile the Roseanne controversy took another turn when ex-husband Tom Arnold claimed Roseanne wanted her sitcom canceled.
“It had to happen. And I am going to tell you the truth, she wanted it to happen, if you saw how her tweets escalated this weekend,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.
“If it hadn’t happened yesterday, this season would have been so awful for everyone every day because she would have felt like she was [being] taken advantage [of], just like when I left the show,” he added. “ABC lost maybe $1 billion from this; this show was grinding out money hand over fist and they lost it all because somebody didn’t say, ‘Get that phone out of her hand.’ She’s not going to go on TV and say these things. But you put that phone in her hand and she is a loose cannon.”
His comments about the incident come after Barr, also 65, blamed her racist tweet on sleeping pills known as Ambien.
She said Jarrett was the offspring of the Muslim Brotherhood and the Planet of the Apes. In the face of the backlash, Roseanne apologized.
“Guys I did something unforgiveable so do not defend me. It was 2 in the morning and I was ambien tweeting-it was memorial day too-i went 2 far & do not want it defended-it was egregious Indefensible. I made a mistake I wish I hadn’t but…don’t defend it please. ty,” she wrote on Twitter
The message has since been deleted.
So far, no reaction from TBS, or its owner Time Warner, on Bee’s fate.
UPDATE: TBS apologized for the remark in a statement released today and said the comment should never have aired. But did not take any action against B ee.
