Selena Gomez’s new “Back to You” video uses sepia-tones and an old-school film style that comes perilously close to Katy Perry’s “Thinking of You” video from 2009. While the looks are similar the videos tell different stories.

Selena’s song is about an unrequited love that just can’t be quenched. The tabs are calling it an ode to
Justin Bieber,
but the story is timeless. It’s about longing for freedom and passion in a passionless existence.

“I wanna hold you when I’m not supposed to
When I’m lying close to someone else
You’re stuck in my head and I can’t get you out of it
If I could do it all again
I know I’d go back to you”

Wow, that sure sounds like her relationship with Bieber. And, her video love interest is a Bieber look-a-like.

Because the lyrics talk about returning to a past love, and Selena and Justin briefly rekindled their romance earlier this year, tabloids are jumping on that angle.

But a closer examination of the video suggests the song may have been inspired by Bieber, but it’s not about him. Big difference.

In the video Selena is the rebel with an open heart. She’s stuck at party looking bored to death until she spies a lanky blonde-haired boy across the room. He looks just as bored.

But she’s the leader. “Want to steal a car?” she asks.

“Sure,” the boy replies.

The scene cuts to a bright, sunlit field. They film each other. Selena is giddy. The boy… still looks bored and one dimensional.

She finally ditches him. If the song is about Bieber, then he comes across as a jerk.

Katy’s video has the same sepia tone look throughout. She’s waiting for a lover to return from the World War II.
