“Ugly Betty” Michael L. Brea, could be heard screaming “repent. repent” in his mother’s Brooklyn apartment, but he wasn’t rehearsing for a new role. Instead, he was allegedly brutally murdering is mother, Yannick, 51, with a samurai sword.
In the aftermath of the brutal murder, in which some reports claim Brea decapitated his mother, the police response is being questioned and officers faulted for failing to prevent the crime.
Officers responded to calls about a domestic disturbance at Brea’s home earlier in the evening but left without taking any action.
The were called back to the scene again early this morning by neighbors who reported horrifying screams.
Yannick was a survivor of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.
She worked at the Marriott at the World Trade Center, which was destroyed in the attack, but never went back to work afterward.
NYPD SWAT team members confronted Brea, 31, who was rambling and incoherent, at the apartment. The scene was described as “very bloody.” He had to be tasered before he could be subdued.
The sometime actor is in police custody and undergoing psychiatric evaluation.
Bernard Bren who lives nearby claimed he woke up when he heard screaming.
“It sounded like a lady’s voice and after a while I just didn’t hear the woman’s voice again,” he said.
Gregory Clare who lived below the apartment heard the commotion as well.
“Michael was yelling, ‘Repent, repent, sinner, sinner’, over and over again’, Clare said. ‘He was screaming, ‘You never accepted Jesus’. It was real loud.”
Brea appeared in one episode of “Ugly Betty,” but he apparently has done little other acting. He has no listing on the Internet Movie Data Base, an Internet site that tracks people in the entertainment business.
Brea also was reported to be a dancer in film “Step Up 3D.” He was described by neighbours as “quiet” and into martial arts.
