Anja Rubik has added activist, philanthropist and businesswoman to her resume in addition to modeling over her long career, and she combines them all in a stunning new photo spread for Porter magazine, highlighting the beauty, sensuality and plight of our oceans.
The magazine’s “Summer Escape” issue was published in conjunction with “Parley for the Oceans,” a global networking group pioneering a new approach to environmentalism. The focus is on the growing threat to the seas from plastic pollution.
It’s all about the beauty and fragility of the oceans, according to the magazine.
The shoot took place on Parley’s island in the Maldives, and juxtiposes extraordinary fashion imagery with “powerful documentary photography, illustrating the stark reality and impact of plastic pollution upon our seas.”
“The accompanying essays take a deep-dive into the urgent environmental catastrophe facing our planet, including a moving Q&A with world-renowned oceanographer Sylvia Earle; and highlight ways we can all affect change,” the magazine says in a statement.
Beside posing, Anja, 36, also guest-edited the issue. “Did you know every second breath we take comes from the oceans?” she notes. “The fashion community can drive the movement – we can create trends,” she adds.
The Polish model urges readers to get involved by pledging to reduce personal plastic use and share the hashtag #plasticnotfantastic.
Renowned fashion photographer Mario Sorrenti was behind the lens, while Camille Bidault-Waddington handled styling. Hair by Christiaan. Makeup by Aaron de Mey.
