Kaia Gerber teams up with Karl Lagerfeld to launch a fashion collaboration that’s supposed to reflect the designer’s “Parisian aesthetic and the model’s Los Angeles upbringing.” But the clothes are anything but child’s play for the 16-year-old.

Gerber, the daughter of supermodel Cindy Crawford and businessman Randi Gerber, is highly sexualized by the Chanel fashion master, who has never seen a model too young to put into a campaign.

Chanel tapped Lily-Rose Depp, daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis, for an eye-wear campaign when she was just 16. Other celeb kids like Anais Gallegher, the daughter of former Oasis singer-songwriter Noel Gallagher, Lottie Moss, sister of Kate Moss and both Kylie and Kendall Jenner walked underage.

But Kaia topped them all. She starred in a highly sexualized campaign for Versace when she was a 10-year-old.

The photos caused such an uproar, Crawford declared she would put Kaia’s modeling career on hold until she was 17.

But that didn’t last long. She appeared in a 2015 spread in Carine Roitfeld’s CR Fashion Book, wearing thigh-high leather and Versace platform boots. In another, she wore heavy cat-eye makeup, a Prada dress and a come-hither pout. She was all of 13.

The fashion industry has been under fire for years over controversies involving models who are too young, or too thin. It’s only made halting progress.

Finally in 2013, the New York State Legislature took action. It passed a bill to cover models under 18 by the state’s child-performer law, which provide a number of safeguards. Both the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and the Model Alliance, an advocacy group pushed for the law.

“When you dress children up in makeup and high heels, the implication is that they are sexual objects, and more often than not, that is how the images are read by the public.” Model Alliance founder Sara Ziff told The New York Times.

Even so, the industry still says 16-year-olds are allowed to walk in shows and pose for editorial campaigns.

Lagerfeld caused an uproar all his own when he said earlier this year that models were “stupid,” “toxic,” and overall “sordid creatures.”

He also blasted the #MeToo movement. “I read somewhere that now you must ask a model if she is comfortable with posing. It’s simply too much, from now on, as a designer, you can’t do anything,” he told Numero, a French fashion magazine.

Gerber reportedly had a hand designing the “casual chic,” line which is sold through Revolve.com. It’s called Karl x Kaia.

It’s not exactly back to school wear. Prices range from $400 and up depending on the piece. Check out the photos and video below and let us know your thoughts.
