Actor Wesley Snipes is praying for a miracle to keep him out of jail on a federal tax evasion conviction. Otherwise, he will head to the slammer for up to three years, starting Thursday (Nov. 9).
The Blade star told Larry King he is hopeful his prayers of a reprieve will be answered, but he is preparing for the worst.
Famous friends, including Woody Harrelson and Denzel Washington, have urged the court to spare him the jail sentence.
“We still have prayers out there. We still believe in miracles. So don’t send me up the river yet,” he told King, maintaining his innocence.
Lawyer Daniel R Meachum told King he was planning a last-ditch appeal of the sentence. Snipes is scheduled to turn himself in at the McKean Federal Correctional Institution in Pennsylvania.
“I think any man would be nervous if his liberty is at stake. I’m disappointed that the system seems not to be working for me in this situation,” he said.
His lawyer has tried to hang the rap on his tax advisers, Douglas P Rosile and Eddie Ray Kahn, who allegedly duped Snipes into believing he did not have to pay taxes.
Both were also jailed yesterday.
