Johnny Depp is back on more familiar waters after the flop of his movie with Angelina Jolie. The first trailer for “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” was released today (Dec. 13), in which Capt. Jack Sparrow journeys in search of the fabled Fountain of Youth.
The journey begins when Sparrow meets a woman from his past played by Penelope Cruz. She forces him aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane).
Blackbeard is, according to Sparrow, “the pirate all other pirates fear.” He also happens to be Cruz’s character’s dad.
Poor Jack isn’t sure if it’s love, or if she’s a ruthless con artist who’s using him to find the fabled Fountain.
“How is it we can never meet without you pointing something at me?” she asks in the trailer, an obvious double entendre.
Cruz will be filling the shoes of Keira Knightley who starred as the sexy love interest in the previous movies.
Also missing from the film will be Orlando Bloom. In fact, the movie will be a stand-alone, with little connection to the past movies’ story lines except for the principal characters.
Director Rob Marshall is also stepping in for Gore Verbinski, who directed the three previous films in the series.
This time around, the film will also attempt to cash in on the 3-D phenomenon.
The international cast includes franchise vets Geoffrey Rush as the vengeful Captain Hector Barbossa, and Kevin R. McNally as Captain Jack’s longtime comrade Joshamee Gibbs, plus Sam Claflin as a stalwart missionary and Astrid Berges-Frisbey as a mysterious mermaid.
