Lady Gaga looks like an exotic space alien as she opens her new video for song “Born This Way,” wearing a conical hairdo reminiscent of “Saturday Night Live’s” Coneheads. She proclaims herself “Mother Monster.”
The heavily produced video, which she shot over four days with Director Jonas Åkerlund, plays off “an alien territory in space” and portrays an alien birth, with something horrible and slimy crawling out from between her legs that resembles her head.
“Thus began a new race, within the race of humanity,” Gaga says in the introduction. “A race that bears no prejudice.”
“Dyed my bangs black. Its my new monsterlook,” she tweeted over the weekend before the video was released today (Feb. 28). “Let the mitosis of the future begin. Off to meet Judas.”
“After all the whiskey, lipstick, and late nights editing, the Born This Way video is DONE,” she continued on Twitter.
The video ties in with her Grammy performance, in which she was carried on stage in a high tech egg, designed by Hussein Chalayan, that resembled a pod from the 1950s horror movie “Invasion of the Body Snatchers.”
In any event, in the video the birth of the Mother Monster is countered by the birth of “evil.”
The imagery is equal parts futuristic and retro sci-fi camp, with lots of crotch grabbing and birth-like imagery.
