Kirstie Alley got into a shouting match with comedian George Lopez over her weight and last night on ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars,” her plus size looked like it caught up with her. Lopez must be snickering to himself, but it wasn’t her fault!
She and pro partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy crashed to the ground after Chmerkovskiy just couldn’t handle the load.
He developed a muscle spasm in his thigh, causing his leg to give out. “My thigh just gave out, I’m so sorry,” Maksim said after the dance was over.
He was also quick to defend his partner. “Any dancer knows, it has to do with muscle strain,” he said. “It had nothing to do with her.”
Both dancers went down and stayed down for what seemed like an interminable amount of time, although it was actually about five seconds.
The timing couldn’t have been worse. Kristie was dancing a tribute to her parents.
Just when she got her first big movie role in Star Trek 2, she learned that her mother and father were in a car accident involving a drunk driver. Her mom was killed and her dad was left in critical condition.
“This song [‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’] depicts the most turning point in my life,’ Kirstie said during rehearsals. “The song depicts the hopefulness after the despair.”
Fortunately, the judges were all supportive and gave them a generous score of seven all the way around.
“Sometimes tragedy leads to amazingly beautiful moments. I think despite the fact you had a mess up at the beginning something magical happened after that and you were so connected to the music,” said Carrie Ann Inaba.
“Dancing is a bit like life – it’s about overcoming adversities and you did that,” exclaimed Len Goodman.
“Once you got up it was better than ever,” chimed in Bruno Tonioli.
