American Idol Shocker: Pia Toscano Sent Home (Video)

Pia Toscano, the fetching brunette singer with the power vocals, was eliminated from American Idol Thursday (Apr. 7) in a shocking development — to the judges. But Pia had a bullseye on her back after her performance Wednesday.

With voters in charge of eliminations, all the judges could do was express shock. They have been overly enthusiastic about Pia and just about every other candidate.

“I have no idea what just happened here,” said judge Jennifer Lopez. “I’m shocked, I’m angry, I don’t even know what to say.”

“Murder! Murder! You killed it,” rocker Steven Tyler screamed.

Judge Randy Jackson expressed similar sentiments:, “I’m never really mad on this show, but this makes me mad.”

Indeed, Toscano, 22 from Queens, New York, had a powerful voice and stunning good looks.

But in the end her performance of “River Deep Mountain High” during the show’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame night Wednesday was flat and boring– although the judges offered effulgent praise.

Twitter was aflame with reaction. Even celebrities weighed in. “Pia should have won the whole thing! I’m not watchin Idol anuymore. I’m with JLO on this one…” wrote Jersey Shore’s Snooki.

Toscano was on the bubble with Jacob Lusk of Compton, Calif., and Stefano Langone of Kent, Wash.

Toscano is the fifth female contestant to be voted off “Idol” since the field was narrowed to its “top 13” contenders. Now eight are left in the competition.

Haley Reinhart of Wheeling, Ill., and Lauren Alaina of Rossville, Ga., are the last female contestants.

Last week Naima Adedapo of Milwaukee and Thia Megia of Hayward, Calif., were booted in a double elimination.

The judges used their only save for Casey Abrams of Wilmette, Ill., who received the lowest number of votes among male singers and was eliminated.

The judges are probably regretting their decision to use their save for him, no that Pia is gone. Her elimination is final.

She was an early favorite and considered a front runner, until the voters spoke.

“I’m good,” Toscano said when host Ryan Seacrest asked how she was doing. No, she was gone.

The race is now wide open. Check out the videos below.
