Jerry Seinfeld Upends UK, Disses Royal Wedding on TV

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld knows how to insult a nation. He called the upcoming Royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton a “circus” on British television, shocking the hosts and causing the TV station to pull his interview from its Web site.

Seinfeld, filmed in New York, was promoting his stand-up show at the O2 on June 3, and made an appearance on ITV’s “Daybreak,” the UK equivalent of NBC’s “Today” show.

When he was asked if he was looking forward to the wedding, Seinfeld deadpanned: ‘Yes, I’m very excited. Well it’s a circus act, it’s an absurd act,” according to London’s Daily Mail.

“You know, it’s a dress-up. It’s a classic English thing of lets play dress-up. Let’s pretend that these are special people. OK, we’ll all pretend that – that’s what theatre is,” he continued.

“That’s why the British have the greatest theatre in the world. They love to dress up and they love to play pretend.

“And that’s what the Royal Family is – it’s a huge game of pretend. These aren’t special people – it’s fake outfits, fake phoney hats and gowns.”

“It’s fantastic. We don’t have anything like that,” he added.

The 56-year-old comedian drew an instant rebuke from the show’s hosts, who portrayed him as an upstart colonial.

“I’ll join in on any of that stuff, if it’s a Brit saying. But I can’t bear Americans criticizing the Royal family. It turns me into a Royalist!” said show host Adrian Chiles.

Co-host Christine Bleakley chimed in: “How dare he!”

“He’ll be doing that show from the Tower of London, never mind the O2,” Chiles added.

Although the Seinfeld interview is promoted on the homepage of ITV’s Web site, the video clip is no longer posted.

Seinfeld also gave a shout out to fellow comedian Ricky Gervais for his much criticized Golden Globes performance.

“The job of a comedian is not to leave the situation as you found it. Your job is to come into that room and make something happen in that room,” he said.
