“Glee” star Matthew Morrison is getting a big boost from superstar Elton John and the first example of their collaboration broke today (Apr. 18) on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show.
Morrison will release a solo album later this year that will feature a duet with John.
The song mashes up two of Elton’s hits from his 1972 album Honky Chateau: “Mona Lisa And Mad Hatters” and “Rocket Man.” The tune will be released on iTunes Tuesday (Apr. 19).
Seacrest aired a two-minute preview clip on his show.
John is a big fan of Glee and of Morrison. “It’s great, really fantastic. He sings great on it,” he told Parade magazine about the song.
“It’s a medley of ‘Mona Lisas and Madhatters’ going into ‘Rocket Man.'”
“Elton was a bigger thing just because I’m friendly with him but I don’t know him that well,” Morrison told reporters in a satellite interview. “So it was really a kind of nerve-wracking process to ask him to do it but he was so accommodating and so game for the whole thing.”
Morrison, 32, who plays glee club director Mr. Schuester on the Fox show, also wants to recruit Gwyneth Paltrow for his album.
She returns to the show on Tuesday (Apr. 18) for her third guest appearance and will cover chart topper Adele.
Paltrow, who plays sex education teacher Holly Holiday, and Morrison’s Mr. Schuester are love interests on the show.
Morrison says his new album won’t be a “Glee album, although it started out that way.
“I don’t want to make a ‘Glee’ album,” he said. “I want to do something that’s really personal to me.”
The debut disc, Bringing It to the Masses, will drop next month.
