Former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger knows how to end a 25-year marriage — bang the hired help. The shocking revelation, which led to the birth of a child, prompted wife Maria Shriver to walk out of the marriage, according to reports.
Schwarzenegger acknowledged fathering the child, The Los Angeles Times reported this morning.
Although the incident occurred nearly a decade ago, it was still 15 years into their marriage, and Arnold apparently only clued in his wife after his term as governor ended this year.
The former staffer, who worked for the family for 20 years and retired in January, has not been named.
Until Schwarzenegger’s admission, the former staffer said her then-husband fathered the child, according to the Times.
The couple, one of the more enduring in the Hollywood social whirl, announced May 9 that they were ending their marriage on amicable terms.
It seemed clear that Shriver was the one who ended the marriage because she moved out of the family’s Brentwood mansion, apparently after Schwarzenegger confessed his infidelity earlier this year,
“After leaving the governor’s office I told my wife about this event, which occurred over a decade ago,” Schwarzenegger told The Times in a statement.
“I understand and deserve the feelings of anger and disappointment among my friends and family.
“There are no excuses and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused. I have apologized to Maria, my children and my family. I am truly sorry.
“I ask that the media respect my wife and children through this extremely difficult time,” the statement concluded. “While I deserve your attention and criticism, my family does not.”
Shriver stood by her husband during his 2003 gubernatorial campaign in what became known as “Gropegate,” because of allegations that Schwarzenegger fondled women against their wishes.
