Kanye West has enlisted Jay-Z, Rick Ross and Nicki Minaj for his major creep out of a new video for his song “Monster.” It’s so twisted, it opens with a disclaimer then cuts to a female model hanging by the neck by a chain. WTF?
West, who is known for plumbing the outrageous, follows a trend in recent videos by other artists that focus on dark subjects. But leave it to Kanye to feature necrophilia.
The opening scene pans down the hanging body, one of three, from her blank stare to her open-toed stiletto heel Louboutins.
“The following content is in no way to be interpreted as misogynistic or negative towards any groups of people. It is an art piece and it shall be taken as such.”
But saying so, doesn’t make it so. And the video seems to push the extremes on all counts.
Jay-Z raps over dead women and Kayne appears in bed with two dead women. Later raps holding a severed head.
Minaj pops into the video as a dominatrix in black latex bustier, with a whip. She’s standing over a woman in a white dress with a black hood over her head.
Guess who it is.
Of course, the video is really no worse than your average horror flick, these days. Let’s call the clip “Thriller” meets “Saw IV.”
At a time when shows like HBO’s “Trueblood” are gore inflected with heavy sexual and sado-masochistic overtones, West’s video could be considered a send up of the genre.
No better, but certainly no worse than “Blacula,” or other blaxploitation horror films.
