Beyonce lit up the stage at MTV’s Video Music Awards last night. She capped her energetic performance, by announcing that she and music mogul husband Jay-Z are expecting their first child together.
Beyonce performed her song “Love On Top,” from her album 4 and drew a standing ovation
Then, the 29-year-old singer pulled open her jacket and proudly rubbed her baby bump.
Jay-Z, whom she married in 2008, was caught by the cameras off stage with a wide smile.
Kanye West jumped up and down, slapped him on the back and shook his shoulders at the news.
The mother-to-be gave a hint of what would come when she took the stage and said: “I want you to feel the love that’s growing inside of me.”
Before the show, she met the media and showed off her baby bump under her orange Lanvin gown.
“I have a surprise!” she said.
While most were surprised, her close friends have known for a while.
‘I have known for quite a while, and she’s happy, and Jay is happy, and that’s all that counts,” former Destiny’s Child bandmate Kelly Rowland told People afterward.
“I just think it’s going to be so natural for her. Its natural for her now,” she added.
Beyonce has been hinting for a while that a child might be in her plans.
“I always said I was going to have a baby at 30. I’m 29 now,” she told Piers Morgan in June.
“But I also said I was going to retire at 30. So I don’t know,’ she said, adding: ‘I am not retiring, I tell you.”
