Hunger Games First Look; Shocking New Trailer (watch!) 2Jennfier Lawrence, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland and Woody Harrelson make up an all-star cast for “The Hunger Games,” a post-apocalyptic film that looks really scary in the first full-length trailer for the much hyped picture.

The movie is based on the Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins, and producers are hoping they can generate the same kind of teen fan devotion as the Stephanie Meyer’s “Twilight” series on the big screen.

The story focuses on Katniss Everdeen, a 16-year-old who lives in a post-apocalyptic Panem, a country where the United States once existed.

It’s a totalitarian state and those in power keep the populace occupied by picking a boy and a girl, between 12 and 16, from each of 12 districts to participate in a blood sport, known as the Hunger Games.

The games are perverse entertainment for the masses and part government intimidation. In front of a nationally televised audience, “Tributes” fight until one is left standing.

Of course, romance is neatly rolled into the package.

Oscar nominee Lawrence plays Katniss, who is drafted into the Hunger Games. Josh Hutcherson, who plays fellow competitor Peeta, and Liam Hemsworth plays Katniss’s friend Gale.

Banks plays Katniss’ guide Effie Trinket, Tucci is Caesar Flickerman and Sutherland presides over the mess as President Snow. Harrelson plays an aging Hunger Games victor who counsels the young fighters.

Studio Lionsgate is betting big on the franchise. It’s already announced that “Catching Fire,” the second movie in the trilogy will be released on Nov. 22, 2013.
