Meryl Streep Wins Another Top Honor: Vogue Cover (photos) 2Meryl Streep finally gets her moment on Vogue magazine’s cover for the January issue. It’s her first and at 62, she’s the oldest woman to appear on the highly coveted media turf. What took so long?

Streep is currently generating Oscar buzz (again) for her portrayal of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the upcoming Weinstein Company film “Iron Lady.”

The two-time Oscar winner has already caused an uproar in Britain for her portrayal. Members from Thatcher’s conservative party claim her character misrepresents the iron-willed leader.

“She was never, in my experience, the half-hysterical, over-emotional, over-acting woman portrayed by Meryl Streep,” said former Thatcher cabinet member and Conservative Party Head Norman Tebbit, in London’s The Telegraph newspaper.

Streep said she was drawn to the character because of Thatcher’s complex personality and the policies and issues the film deals with.

The material embedded in [the film] is a lot of what I’ve been thinking about,” she told the magazine.

“The themes in the film, which I don’t feel like underlining, have interested me for a while. And you never see these subjects covered in films normally, and so that was very thrilling,” she added.

She said playing Thatcher was “humbling on a certain level and infuriating, just like it is to live in your own body. Because you recognize your own failings, and I have no doubt that she recognized hers.”

Streep plays Thatcher from age 49 to 85, covering the Tory leader’s rise and fall from power.
