Demi Lovato’s Twitter temper tantrum over an eating disorder joke on the Disney show “Shake it Up” has done just that, shaken up Disney suits, who promised to drop the joke from the show.
Lovato was a Disney teen queen with her own Disney Channel show, “Sonny With a Chance,” until she was overwhelmed by her own problems with bulima, cutting and a bi-polar disorder.
She had a meltdown while on tour in South America with the Jonas Brothers Band, and landed in rehab. Since then, she pulled out of the show and has been outspoken about the emotional pressures she’s faced in her career.
A one-liner on “Shake It Up” provoked her Twitter tirade. A character reportedly says, “I could just eat you up, well if I ate,” suggesting she’s avoiding food to stay thin.
“I find it really funny how a company can lose one of their actress’ from the pressures of an EATING DISORDER and yet still make joke about that very disease….. #nice,” Lovato wrote.
Lovato’s comments reverberated across the Twitter-sphere and spilled into the tabloids. Disney was quick to respond.
“We hear you & are pulling both episodes as quickly as possible & reevaluating them … It’s NEVER our intention to make light of eating disorders!” a rep Tweeted in response.
Disney launched “Shake It Up” last year. It’s about two dancers, Cece Jones (Bella Thorne) and Rocky Blue (Zendaya) and their mis-adventures as dancers on a local show, “Shake It Up Chicago.”
