Kirsten Dunst is becoming a doyenne of exotic science fiction with her latest turn in “Upside Down,” a bizarre film about mirror worlds that are so close yet so very far apart, according to a new trailer. Can she bridge the gap?
Dunst stars as Eve to Jim Sturgess’s Adam. They occupy the adjoining but separate worlds. A childhood flirtation threatens to upend their universe when Adam struggles to find Eve as grownups.
Kirsten Dunst: No Love Lost
There is no love lost, however, between the two societies, one rich, the other poor. The mirror worlds are marked by mistrust, mutual hate and political and economic strife.
Adam makes a play for Eve by crossing into her world despite all the social and political risks.
The science fiction-romance drama is written and directed by Juan Diego Solanas and financed by French Studio 37. It’s slated for release next year, although it’s problematic at this point whether it will be widely distributed in the United States.
Kirsten Dunst in Melancholia
Last year, Dunst starred in Lars von Trier’s “Melancholia,” another dreamy sci-fi love drama set against the destruction of the earth. Charlotte Gainsbourg and Kiefer Sutherland also starred.
The film also produced overseas with co-producers in Sweden, France, Germany and Italy, premiered in May at the 64th Cannes Film Festival. Dunst, who appeared topless, received the festival’s Best Actress Award for her performance.
Dunst also starred in three “Spiderman” films. In more earthly pursuits she stars in the upcoming “On the Road,” based on a Jack Kerouac novel by the same name and “The Bachelorette,” a comedy with Will Ferrell.
