Johnny Depp and long-time companion Vanessa Paradis are the latest celebrity couple to reportedly hit the rocks. Are 40-something Hollywooders feeling their age and itching for a change, maybe a younger companion, when they near mid-life?
Deep, 48, and the French singer and actress, 39, have been stable by Hollywood terms. They’ve been together for more than 14 years and have two children. But time and tradition are meaningless in Hollywood.
Numerous celebrities from Courtney Cox and Madonna to Kelsey Grammar have abandoned seemingly stable, long-term relationships once they hit their 40s.
The latest reports claim that the couple has been locked in constant bitter arguing, which undercuts the idyllic relationship Depp portrayed in a recent interview.
“People around him are worried about how Johnny is doing because he and Vanessa seem so fractured right now,” a source told gossip Web site RadarOnline. “Johnny isn’t handling anything well right now.”
The strain might be caused by the flop of Depp’s latest movie, “The Rum Diary.” The project, about gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson, was very close to his heart.
Career strains and growing older can put stress on a relationship.
“Johnny has started reaching out to lawyers, probably to quietly discuss how to get out of the relationship,” the source said. “They’re not married but they’ve been together for years and have kids together so it isn’t as easy as just breaking up.”
Depp says he’s never seen the need for formal marriage. “I never found myself needing that piece of paper. Marriage is really from soul to soul, heart to heart,” he said in an interview. “You don’t need somebody to say: ‘OK, you’re married.”
But it could get messy for him if they do split and their assets are up for grabs. No marriage also means no pre-nuptial agreement.
Several of the marital problem reports have surfaced in France, where Paradis is a top star.
Depp and Paradis have a home in Meudon in the Paris suburbs, Los Angeles, Le Plan-de-la-Tour in the south of France and own an island in the Bahamas.
Paradis was reported to have flown into a jealous rage when Depp film a steamy shower love scene with Angelina Jolie in their movie, “The Tourist.” The scene was allegedly dropped as a result.
The French singer, 37, was so distressed over the script’s racy theme, she begged Depp to pull out of the project, but he’d already signed on for the role.
