Katy Perry, apparently emotionally drained by her divorce from Russell Brand, has pulled a startling about face. She now won’t be going to the People’s Choice Awards, where she’s up for seven honors.
Perry is coming off the most successful year in her career after winding up a sold out tour and tying Michael Jackson with five No. 1 singles on the charts from the same album.
But her 14-month marriage to Brand crumbled in December, and he filed for divorce on Dec. 31. That left the awards program in a delicate position because Brand had been invited to attend.
To avoid any awkward moments, Brand, 36, was reportedly told not to come. But now Katy is a no show as well.
“Unfortunately I will not be able to attend the People’s Choice Awards. I want to thank u all for voting for me, fingers crossed! #KATYCATS,” she Tweeted Monday night.
Among her nominations, Katy, 27, is up for Favorite Pop artist, Favorite Female artist and Favorite song of the year.
In a spoof that later proved prophetic, Brand brazenly removed his wedding ring in a video in which he discussed his tour of American colleges. (see below)
“I am going to meet people from sororities and fraternities. I don’t know what a sorority is except for what I have seen on Nudevista – that they are sort of sex clubs for women,” he says.
“A week of revolution and, more importantly, I am going to learn first-hand about sororities.”
Although Perry declared on Twitter that no one speaks for her about the divorce, tabloids continue to report that she is anxious to try to seek a reconciliation with Brand.
“Katy was absolutely crushed by Russell’s decision. She’s furious after everything he’s done, but still insists there must be a way to reconcile and try to work things out,” a source told the UK’s Grazia magazine.
“She told Russell that if he’d agreed to marriage counselling, they wouldn’t be in this mess and tried to persuade him to fly back to the States and meet her. She’s now considering jetting to the UK as she’s desperate to see him and talk to him.” the source said.
