Ricky Gervais Tart at Globes, But Lacked Shock Value (video) 1Ricky Gervais did his thing, again, as Golden Globes host, but this time he lacked the shock-value of his unexpected performance last year. He seemed tame by comparision, even tough his jokes were just as tart.

Most of the usual suspects on the receiving end of his barbs–Johnny Depp, Jodie Foster, Kim Kardashian –rolled with the punches. They seem to take to heart Gervais’ remarks. Given their wealth and privilege, they should be able to take a joke.

“It’s been an amazing year in show business. It’s not all been good news. What’s with all the divorces? What’s going on? Arnold and Maria, J. Lo and Mark Anthony, Ashton and Demi,” he said during his opening.

“Kim Kardashian and some guy no one will remember. He wasn’t around long. Seventy-two days. A marriage that lasted 72 days. I’ve sat through longer James Cameron acceptance speeches,” he said.

Justin Bieber nearly had to take a paternity test,” he continued “What a waste of a test that would have been. No, he’s not the father. The only way he could have impregnated the girl was if he borrow one of Martha Stewart’s old turkey basters. Open wide.”

In fact, Gervais was upstaged this year by some of the recipients. They cursed and made penis jokes. Even Meryl Streep dropped an F-bomb. She blurted it out when she discovered she forgot her glasses and couldn’t read her acceptance speech. The show this year was run on a seven-second delay and her curse was bleeped out.

“I thought he did a great job,” Clooney told reporters. “I think he handled tonight like a proper good host again … people were expecting a lot of trash talk, and he did a little bit of that, and he made me laugh, he was very funny.”

Gervais sauntered onto the stage drinking a beer, but some reports claim that the British comedian pretty much phoned in his performance.
