Heidi Klum and UK singer Seal have hit the seven-year bump that seems to derail many celebrity marriages. As the old saying goes, familiarity breeds contempt… and boredom.
In an official statement today (Jan. 23), the couple blamed their split on “growing apart.” That’s usually code for diverging careers.
Although Klum is at the top of her game, she’s 38 and in the twilight of her career as a supermodel. Seal at 48 is also past his prime, although reports say he’s been working almost non-stop. The sense that the best years of their careers were behind them probably led to friction in the marriage. Call it an early mid-life crisis.
Heidi Klum, Seal Full Statement While we have enjoyed seven very loving, loyal and happy years of marriage, after much soul-searching we have decided to separate. We have had the deepest respect for one another throughout our relationship and continue to love each other very much, but we have grown apart. This is an amicable process and protecting the well-being of our children remains our top priority, especially during this time of transition. We thank our family, friends, and fans for their kind words of support. And for our children’s sake, we appreciate you respecting our privacy.
According to new reports, Klum apparently also became fed up with Seal’s volcanic temper. His anger has become too much for Heidi to take, in no small part because it’s affecting their children, according to gossip site TMZ.
Anger is a completely normal, usually healthy, human emotion, according to medical authorities. But when it gets out of control and turns destructive, it can lead to problems—problems, including the quality of life. Uncontrolled anger is also a form of abuse.
Most anger is usually borne out of frustration, a sense of entitlement or even a feeling of powerlessness. If Heidi’s career was overshadowing his, then he may have expressed feelings of inadequacy as anger. In other words, he bullied her to assert power over her.
Heidi’a success as an entrepreneur created a distance between them. It’s no surprise that Seal has a new album coming out and he’s about to launch an international tour.
A hiatus followed after his 2008 album Soul. But he followed up two years later with a rapid succession of studio albums, Commitment in 2010 and Soul 2 last year.
In 2009, Seal may have tipped the underlying tension in their marriage. “It is nice to be in newspapers and magazines for something other than my marriage,” he said during an interview in Australia.
Ironically, last February, Klum praised Seal for his parenting skills. “When I first met Seal he had a kindness and compassion that was so sincere I knew he’d be a good father,” Klum said, according to London’s The Independent newspaper.
“But it wasn’t until Leni was born and we had our three other children that I grasped what a great dad he is. He has infinite amounts of love and patience for our kids,” Klum added. “He puts me and the children first.”
In 2009, she also legally adopted his surname, Samuel, and they renewed their marriage vows every year.
Seal or sources close to him have yet to reveal his side of the story. And maybe he never will.
