Kelly Clarkson Gives Anthem its Due at Super Bowl (watch!)

Kelly Clarkson Gives Anthem its Due at Super Bowl (watch!) 1Kelly Clarkson, winner of American Idol’s first season, sang the Star Spangled Banner to open Super Bowl XLVI tonight (Feb. 5). She hit every note and sang every word and finally gave the song its proper due.

Clarkson must have felt some pressure given last year’s performance by Christina Aguilera, who muffed the lyrics.

Aguilera was about 51 seconds into the song, when she botched the fourth line of the song, “O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming.” Instead she sang a mash up of the second line: “What so proudly we watched, at the twilight’s last streaming.”

Clarkson, in contrast, sailed right through the stumbling block. She’s been nothing it not a consummate pro since she won the television show.

Two weeks ago, Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler sang a raspy, screechy rendition of the song at the AFC championship game. The performance was widely panned, although he later said he planned to sing the song that way.

“I don’t know. As I said before, I put emphasis on, “In the land of the free” and I went up,” Tyler said.

“Oddly enough I hit the note so I don’t know what they are talking about. I emphasized ‘free’ which was for freedom. It was well thought out prior to. I wasn’t messing with American tradition,” he added.

At least Tyler got the words right.

Before the game, Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert sang a “America the Beautiful” with a country twang.

Madonna, Nicki Minaj, Cee Lo Green and other celebrities were slated to perform at halftime.
