“Smash,” is a prime-time soap starring Debra Messing as the lyricist for a new musical about Marilyn Monroe. Anjelica Huston plays a hard-driving Broadway producer, and McPhee is the sexy up-and-coming starlet who threatens to take over the show.

McPhee shows how she can sizzle in a new photo shoot for GQ magazine. The photo spread initially leaked over the Internet, but has now gone public.

“Smash” drew the highest rating for any 10 p.m. drama this season among the young adult viewers, according to live-plus same-day figures released today by The Nielsen Co. The show averaged 11.44 million viewers, the most for any non-sports program on NBC in the 10-11 p.m. Monday time slot since 2008 when it aired “SNL Presidential Bash ’08.”

The show is being executive produced by Steven Spielberg with help from the producers of Broadway hits American Idiot, Chicago, Hairspray and Spring Awakening.

Smash takes Broadway to Network TV

“We’re in a pretty bad situation. We desperately need something to catch fire, and we hope this is it,” Robert Greenblatt, chairman of NBC’s entertainment division told The New York Times.

How can it go wrong? McPhee sizzles in front of the camera. It hardly seems that long ago that McPhee was singing for her supper on “American Idol.” She finished second on the fifth season in 2006 and has been steadily building her career. “Smash” could be her big breakout.

Does she have the goods? Check out her photos.
