Madonna Reacts to MIA Super Bowl Finger Flap (listen!) 1Madonna talked at length about her Super Bowl performance with Ryan Seacrest and expressed dismay that British rapper M.I.A gave the finger while the camera was on her and uttered an expletive. She called it out of place.

“I was really surprised. I didn’t know anything about it,” she told Seacrest. “I mean I wasn’t happy about it. I understand it’s punk rock and everything, but, to me, there was such a feeling of love and good energy, and positivity.. it seemed negative.

“It’s one of those things it’s such a teenager… irrelevant thing to do. There was such a feeling of love and unity there; what was the point? It was just out of place,” she said.

Of course, M.I.A., real name Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam, is no teenager. She’s 36 years old. She claimed the rude gesture and profanity were due to nerves and a rush of adrenalin during the performance. But it didn’t look that way from an audience viewpoint.

The gesture seemed deliberate and pre-planned at least by her. It caught Super Bowl host network NBC by surprise and censors who were operating on a seven-second delay, did not bleep it out. The incident lasted all of one second, but was caught by still cameras as well.

As for nerves, Madonna said it was the most nerve-wracking performance of her career. “I was more nervous doing this show than any other show I’ve ever done in my entire life… because it wasn’t my turf. I’m walking into the holy grail of American sports.”

Madonna, 53, said she was hemmed in by the NFL rules and couldn’t get as much rehearsal time as she liked. Plus, she was working with dancers on stage who were volunteers and had never met them before. She was also only given eight minutes to set up the stage, which she called “a form of insanity.”

She said her two big concerns were the opening when her throne docked, because in rehearsals she didn’t get close enough to get off her throne, and her cartwheels on the bleachers. She said she sailed after that.

“I was so jacked up on adrenalin it was over before I realized it,” she said.
