Producers are hoping they can tap the same teen fan devotion as Stephanie Meyer’s “Twilight” books did on the big screen.

The story focuses on Everdeen, a 16-year-old who lives in post-Apocalyptic Panem. It’s a totalitarian state located where the United States once existed. Those in power keep the populace sated with a blood sport known as the Hunger Games.

The Hunger Games are part perverse entertainment for the masses and part government intimidation. In front of a nationally televised audience, a boy and a girl between 12 and 16 are chosen from each of 12 districts.

The are called “Tributes,” and must fight to the death in a large outdoor arena.

Hunger Games Romance

Of course, romance is neatly rolled into the package. Peeta, who is chosen for the games, reveals on-air his long-time love for Katniss, who joins the games in place of her sister Primrose.

Studio Lionsgate is betting big on the franchise. It’s already announced that “Catching Fire,” the second movie in the trilogy will be released on Nov. 22, 2013.

The photos show Katniss being led through the Arena; Cinna, Haymitch and Peeta discussing strategy; Katniss talking with Gale and Katniss using her bow in the woods.
