Stephen Amell Forbidding as CW's 'Arrow' Action Hero

Stephen Amell casts a long dark shadow as “Arrow,” the CW network’s bid to capitalize on the popularity of superhero characters. The series is adapted from DC Comics title “Green Arrow.”

Paul Blackthorne, Jamey Sheridan, David Ramsey, Colin Donnell, Susanna Thompson, Katie Cassidy, Willa Holland and Colin Salmon co-star in the pilot.

To get the promotion ball rolling, the network released the first photo of the character and his unique costume. The suit is all black leather with some suede patches added and the trademark hood.

The network spared no expense to come up with something different. It hired three-time Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood. She’s best known for working with Tim Burton on “Alice In Wonderland.” It looks like Arrow will have the same dark edge.

“”When I directed the pilot for Smallville, I knew that making Clark Kent relatable would be the key to audiences believing in him as a hero,” Arrow executive producer David Nutter told The Hollywood Reporter, referring to the CW series featuring Superman when he was a teen.

“Arrow is a different show — darker and harder-edged — but it’s the same core idea,” . “We’re creating a real, believable world in which Oliver Queen can do incredible things. Colleen Atwood’s great work on the Arrow costume reflects that effort.”

Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg have been hired to write the show. The basic premise is a familiar one.

Billionaire playboy Oliver Queen (Amell) is marooned on a deserted island for five years. He returns with a mysterious agenda and a lethal set of new skills that he uses in a war on crime.

The Green Arrow, played by Justin Hartley, appeared initially as a guest in several Smallville episodes, but later became a series regular and the character appeared in more than 70 episodes.
