Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth show that “The Hunger Games” is about more than death and violence in a new teaser clip. Their characters, Katniss and Gale, share embrace as Katniss is lead away to begin the deadly games.
Based on a series of novels by Suzanne Collins, the film is about a group of 24 teens who are picked by lottery for the games, which are fight to the death.
Only one will emerge from the competition, unless something happens to upset the harsh dictatorship that runs the country of Panem, which exists in the ruins of North America.
The film ran into some controversy because it received a PG-13 rating despite the high level of violence and other frightening. In contrast, the movie “Bully,” which calls attention to teen bullying in school has received an “R” rating from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).
That will not only limit its audience in theaters, but will prevent it from being shown in junior and senior high schools, where bullying is a major problem.
Of course, that’s not a knock on “The Hunger Games,” but it does raise questions about the MPAA’s skewed priorities.
“The Hunger Games” will hit theaters on Friday, and some estimates predict it could do $100 million in its opening weekend, if the word-of-mouth is good.
