Justin Bieber Drops Boyfriend; Will it Lift His Career? (listen!)

Justin Bieber, BoyfriendJustin Bieber’s new single “Boyfriend,” described as a more grown up sound for the teen sensation, was released today. Bieber is trying to make the transition to a more adult sound and leave behind the crowd of new boy bands invading from Britain.

The single is the first off his upcoming album Believe. Does it sound too much like Justin Timberlake?

Bieber, 18, whipped his fans into a frenzy with teases, a cover photo contest and loads of Tweets before dropping the new song at midnight.

If there is any criticism, it sounds like early Timberlake after he left his boy band NSYNC. And his rapping? What’s the point, he’s no rapper.

“Boyfriend,” co-produced and co-written by Mike Posner, is a simple love song with a beat that girls will easily be able to dance to. Believe will be released later this year, and manager Scooter Braun tweeted that a video is in production.

At the moment, it’s hard to say exactly where the Biebs fits in. The latest boy band, The Wanted, has just landed from the UK, drawing hordes of U.S. fans. Will Justin be brushed aside for the next new thing?

The Canadian teen sensation now has four potential competitors Max George, Siva Kaneswaran, Jay McGuiness, Tom Parker and Nathan Sykes. They debuted in the U.S. on Ellen DeGeneres last week.

Meanwhile, Simon Cowell’s record label Syco Records has launched a competing boy band called One Direction. It’s also made up of Irish and British lads culled from the UK version of his show “X-Factor.” They already have a No. 1 hit on the U.S. charts.
