Rihanna is just about everywhere these days, including the headlines. She was musical guest on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” and sang her heart out. She sang songs off her upcoming album “Unapologetic.”
She was up first with her hit song “Diamonds.” She was decked out in military garb, wearing a camouflage jacket. Oops did she forget her pants?
She was actually wearing a camouflage mini-dress underneath topped off the look with clunky combat boots.
For some reason, this week’s Saturday Night Live just couldn’t let the artists be artists and do their thing. Rihanna’s “Diamonds” performance was cluttered with a green-screen backdrop that did nothing but detract from her performance.
Some critics likened it to a Windows 98 screen saver. It was more like a ’60s throwback music video. The backdrop was not only distracting but cheesy. Rihanna is so visually stunning she really doesn’t need a lot of atmospherics to capture an audience, even if it’s a television audience.
“SNL” is known for its austere music sets and stripped down performances, as if you were actually watching the artist in a club. It’s always given musical acts a lot of integrity. The show should stick with it.
Rihanna’s second performance of “Stay” was classic. The Barbadian singer wore a spaghetti-strap shift dress with a Bob Marley imprint and sang the somber ballad against a black backdrop.
