Melissa Rycroft’s fluid lines and dancer’s body were enough to overcome Olympic gold medalist Shawn Johnson’s perky athleticism to capture the “Dancing With the Stars” Mirror Ball in the first all-star competition. The upset victory was sweet revenge for Melissa.
Rycoft, 29, a former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader and contestant on ABC’s “The Bachelor,” came in third during season eight of the hit show. Johnson, went on to win that season’s Mirror Ball.
Melissa was an underdog almost from the outset. When the season kicked off, She even predicted her own ouster by no later than the fourth week. But she combined both athleticism with fluid dance moves and became a fan favorite with partner Tony Dovolani.
“General Hospital” star Kelly Monaco made to the final three on Monday, but the competition clearly came down to Melissa and Shawn.
The show has become as much of a competition between the pro dancers as it has between contestants. Dovolani had never won a Mirror Ball in 14 seasons, but he’s been a fan favorite. Together, they made an unbeatable combination and exuded lots of chemistry that covered up Melissa’s flaws.
Tony and Melissa showed their determination to win with two perfect scores on Monday. Shawn showed off her athletic skills in the insta-dance round, and Kelly proved her mettle as well, with an 87.5 out of 90, although she was eliminated.
Shawn scored a perfect 30 with the instant cha-cha-cha putting her in second place with dance partner Derek Hough. It seemed like the perfect set-up for a dramatic come-from-behind win in the finale. But it was not to be. Melissa and Tony held on likely thanks to fan voting, and Tony made the win memorable.
