After the fight, the singer posted a few memes on Instagram that show Pacquiao’s unconscious body in humorous poses.
Marquez, also known as “El Dinamita,” knocked Pacquiao out cold in the sixth round of the fight, their fourth meeting. Bieber’s mocking images were picked up by Manila newspapers. That’s all it took to inflame many Filipinos who revere Pacquiao.
Justin Bieber’s Pacquiao Instagram Posts
One photo shows Pacquiao’s lifeless body doing the “lean” with Michael Jackson in a mashup with an image from the King of Pop’s famous dance move.
“Pacquiao doing the lean with MJ .. Classic moment,” Bieber wrote in the caption.
The other photo shows Pacquiao lying flat on the canvas with a worried baby Simba from the movie “Lion King” trying to get him up.
“Dad wake up,” Bieber wrote. The photo has generated more than 10,000 comments.
Bieber has some 30 million followers around the world. The post was swamped with comments both pro and con. Most Filipinos thought the photos were “rude” and “disrespectful,” according to the Manila Bulletin newspaper.
“Well, pacquiao’s our national hero. with all due respect to Justin. he’s a big star, which makes his every move a big deal. this is just really wrong,” wrote one person in a response.
Bieber supporters, however, defended the singer, noting that he was just joking. Still others weren’t amused.
“Yeah, it may be a joke but to some people its not. Pacquiao blacked out. Im sure if jb passed out and someone made fun of him like this you beliebers would get mad. It’s the same for other people. Just saying. This is mad disrespectful,” one critic commented.
Footnote: Bieber is pals with boxer Floyd Mayweather, Jr., who is a rival of Pacquiao’s. For the record Mayweather was effusive in his praise for both fighters.
