Taylor Swift throws in a “Thelma and Louise” scene in her new video for “I Knew You Were Trouble,” off her new album Red. She reportedly wrote the song as a punch in the face to ex-boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal for doing her wrong.
Swift previewed the third single from the album in October on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” It’s another broken-heart song in an album fill with anthems to relationship issues.
The song is about “kind of being frustrated with yourself because you have your heart broken and you knew when you first saw that person you saw all these red flags and you just went for it anyway,” she explained on the show. “So Shame on me.”
The video captures some of her frustration and the “kaleidoscope of memories” she sings about. It opens on a bright note with Swift running hand-in-hand with her guy, enjoying the good times.
But it quickly cuts to what looks like a wasteland. Swift is strumming her guitar and singing her opening refrain, “Once Upon a Time…” expressing how barren she feels.
Moments showing them happy together, including a joyride in a convertible, are interspersed with angst-filled and regretful scenes where the country singer blames herself for getting involved.
Swift released the video yesterday (Dec. 13) on her 23rd birthday. It’s the third video from the album, which shot to No. 1 on the charts when it was released. Coincidentally, it’s also her 23rd video. “How fun,” Taylor tweeted.
