Kim Kardashian is feuding with the online social networking site Instagram. Proposed changes in its “Terms of Service” raises questions about who owns photos and other info posted on the site. If Kim leaves, so, likely, will her 5.7 million followers.
That’s no small thing for the budding photosharing site. Kim has been a frequent user to publicize herself and her business ventures.
So, she likely needs the business as much as Instagram needs her. It’s what you call a Mexican standoff. Kim fired the first shots in a Tweet on Tuesday (Dec. 18). “I really loved Instagram :-( I need to review this new policy. I don’t think its fair,” she wrote.
At issue is a provision in the policy that will give Instagram the right to sell photos to advertisers. It’s one of the condition in new terms of service that take effect next month. Like many web properties, the service is scrambling for ways to make money. Most web properties are currently money losers.
The controversial provision reads in part: “To help us deliver interesting paid or sponsored content or promotions, you agree that a business or other entity may pay us to display your username, likeness, photos (along with any associated metadata), and/or actions you take, in connection with paid or sponsored content or promotions, without any compensation to you.”
Co-founder Kevin Systrom, wary of user discontent, which extends beyond the reality television star, issued a clarification.
“Wwe’re going to remove the language that raised the question,” he Systrom. “Our main goal is to avoid things like advertising banners you see in other apps that would hurt the Instagram user experience.
“Instead, we want to create meaningful ways to help you discover new and interesting accounts and content while building a self-sustaining business at the same time,” he added.
But Kim is nothing if not a savvy businesswoman and she knows that content is king on the Internet. She may drop Instagram, TMZ reported.
“The reality star is planning on waiting to see the revised T.O.S. before she makes her final decision. But unless she sees some radical changes, she’s outtie 5000,” the source said.
