Ben Affleck was gold at the Golden Globes. He not only won best director while his film, “Argo,” won best picture, but he also was clearly the crowd favorite, after giving an emotional shoutout to his wife Jennifer Garner.
“I want to thank my wife who is the reason why I’m standing here,’ he said accepting the award. “I adore you. I love you so much. Thanks for sitting through this. You are my everything. Thank you.”
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which hands out the awards, was clearly thumbing its nose at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The Academy snubbed Affleck for a best director Oscar nomination.
The fact that Affleck’s directorial debut was overlooked by the Academy did not go unnoticed.
“I felt that he should have been nominated,” Argo co-producer George Clooney told reporters. “But you can’t figure out what goes on in the Academy and he’s still nominated for best picture…It’s disappointing, but we’re not out of the water just yet.”
“Argo” is based on a true story about a clandestine mission to rescue U.S. diplomats who were trapped in Iran during the 1979 hostage crisis. They were spirited out of the country under the guise of making a movie, a satire on Hollywood.
Affleck topped Steven Spielberg for “Lincoln,” Ang Lee for “Life of Pi,” Kathryn Bigelow for “Zero Dark Thirty” and Quentin Tarantino for “Django Unchained.”
“Look, I don’t care what the award is. When they put your name next to the names… it’s an extraordinary thing in your life,” Affleck said. “These nominees are exceptional talents.”
Affleck also thanked members of the clandestine services who are unsung heroes.
In the best picture, drama, category, Argo topped “Django Unchained,” “Life of Pi” “Lincoln” and “Zero Dark Thirty.” The latter two films were considered frontrunners for the award, and came up surprisingly short on the night.
