Jennifer Lawrence signaled the arrival of a new generation of actresses with her Golden Globe victory for best actress in a comedy. She shyly joked that she beat Meryl Streep for the award, but there was some universal truth in the statement.
Lawrence, 22, represents the new generation of young Hollywood actresses, who will be dominating motion pictures for the next 20 years.
She earned both Golden Globe and Oscar nominations for her work in the 2010 film “Winter’s Bone, but her victory last night was over a strong field that included Emily Blunt for “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen,” Judy Dench for “Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” Maggie Smith for “Quartet” and, yes, Meryl Streep for “Hope Springs.”
Jennifer Lawrence Stunning in Red Dior
Lawrence has emerged as one of Hollywood’s most versatile actresses. She can carry a small indie film like Silver Linings Playbook, and also deliver the goods in a blockbuster like “The Hunger Games.”
Lawrence gave a witty and emotional speech thanking everyone surrounding the film. She also looked radiant in a red strapless Dior gown.
“What does this say, I beat Meryl,” she giggled.
The line was actually from the 1996 film “The First Wives Club.” Bette Midler‘s character Brenda said it when she picked up an award for Goldie Hawn’s character in the film.
In keeping with the night, Lawrence also poked fun at the HFPA in her thanks to mogul Harvey Weinstein. “I am so honored to be in a film like this…Harvey thank you for killing whoever you had to kill to get me up here today.”
The HFPA has long been criticized for accepting gratuities and favors in exchange for nominations. But Lawrence clearly earned it on her own.
In the David O. Russell-directed romantic comedy-drama, Lawrence plays a dysfunctional Tiffany Maxwell, a young widow and recovering sex addict who also has just lost her job. She meets Pat Solitano, played by Bradley Cooper, who is struggling with a bi-polar disorder.
They piece back their lives and find out what love means. The film’s supporting cast included Robert De Niro, Jacki Weaver, Anupam Kher, Julia Stiles and Chris Tucker.
