Beyoncé Owes an Apology Over Lip-Syncing, Sen. Schumer Says

beyonce-caniliveBeyoncé isn’t off the hook yet for lip-syncing her performance at President Obama’s inauguration last week. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-NY, who hosted the event, is demanding an apology from the singer.

The fact that her performance is causing ripples at the highest levels of Washington officialdom suggests the president and first lady Michelle Obama may also be quietly disappointed.

The situation was compounded because Kelly Clarkson and James Taylor, who appeared before the 31-year-old singer and performed live. Beyoncé was the featured act.

Schumer was captured in photos looking on approvingly with a big smile as Beyonce sang, without realizing she was only mouthing the words. Beyonce hasn’t offered an explanation to anyone, including her home-state senator.

“I have not heard from her before, during or after,” a clearly uncomfortable Schumer said when a New York Post reporter raised the question at Schumer’s regular news conference.

The N.Y. senator said he could not tell she was lip syncing because he could only see her from behind.

Schumer has a personal stake in the issue because he invited Beyoncé and husband Jay-Z to attend the inauguration. He also recruited her to sing, and has been the butt of jokes on Capitol Hill.

“Sen. Schumer promised Beyoncé, but he delivered Milli Vanilli instead,” a Republican congressional aide joked afterward.

Milli Vanilli was a duo, Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus, who shot to fame in the late ’80s. Their acted crumbled in derision after it was discovered they were lip-syncing all their recordings.

An Instagram photo showing Beyoncé wearing a sweatshirt with the logo, “Can I live?” (a Jay-Z song) is being widely interpreted as her response to the controversy.

She’s next slated to perform at the Super Bowl. Odds are, she won’t be lip-syncing.
