Jim Nabors, a television and movie star best know for his roles as Gomer Pyle on the Andy Griffith Show and movies, has decided to come out after marrying his partner of 38 years Stan Cadwallader. Who knew? Besides, everyone that is.

Still it’s a remarkable commentary on the times he grew up in and the mentally of closeted gays who came of age when homosexuality was career death in Hollywood.

Rock Hudson, one of the big stars of that era, kept his homosexuality a dark secret until his death bed from AIDs. He even engaged in a sham marriage to throw off any suspicion.

Ironically, one of Nabors biggest roles as Gomer Pyle was in the movie, “Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.” His sexuality almost certainly would have prevented it from being made had it been widely known. He also appeared regularly on childrens’s shows.

It’s even more amazing that Nabors kept his secret for so long. Not that anyone was asking or hand’t already figured it out.

“I’m 82 and he’s in his sixties and so we’ve been together for 38 years and I’m not ashamed of people knowing,” he said after his ceremony at Seattle’s Fairmont Olympic Hotel on January 15. Same-sex marriage had become legal in Washington in December.

“It’s just that it was such a personal thing, I didn’t tell anybody,” he added. “I’m very happy that I’ve had a partner of 38 years and I feel very blessed. And, what can I tell you, I’m just very happy.”

Cadwallader, 64, met Nabors in Hawaii in 1975 and have had a steady relationship ever since. In a sense they are really poster boys for gay marriage.
