So far, critics who’ve seen the film have been mixed in their reviews.
Gomez and her co-stars have been on a well-publicized tour promoting the Harmony Korine film about four college friends that throw caution to the wind to party in Florida over spring break.
Gomez and co-stars Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine flew to Austin, Texas for the festival along with Director Korine.
The movie has been likened to a “Girls Gone Wild” vacation and includes some nudity as well as a heavy doses of drugs and violence. What’s more the girls spend most of the time parading around in bikinis.

“It turns into this dark, dark, dark movie,” said Benson, “and takes you on a crazy ride.”
So far, the film has only been screened for select audiences. A three-minute preview was released at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival last May and the entire film screened at the Venice International Film Festival in September. That means reviews, so far, have been few and far between.
But of the 15 critics who’ve seen the film, the overall view is trending positive, if for widely different reasons, according to rottentomatoes, which tracks reviews.
The film has a 67 percent rating, which just puts it in the website’s “fresh” category. The harshest reviews have come from the Hollywood trade press.
“It has hypnotic visual style and a dense, driving soundscape. But it’s also too monotonous and thematically empty to be seriously provocative,” wrote Hollywood Reporter critic David Rooney, panning the film.
Guy Lodge, who writes for Variety said the film “may be a shock to the system for fans of teen queens Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens,” but but he trashed the plot as “pretty toothless titillation.”
Korine told a packed audience the movie “came to me like a dream.” H
“I’d been collecting spring break imagery for a couple of years from fraternity and co-ed pornography [websites]…There were all these hyper-sexualized, hyper-violent subjects. Still, he said he was amazed at some of the child-like images he also saw.
The film will be released in New York and Los Angeles this Friday, March 15, and nationwide on March 22. It debuts overseas in April.
