The 25-year-old singer, who is known as one of the hardest working women in music, but also one of the hardest partying, was reportedly warned to change her lifestyle, or else.
After years of back-to-back albums, grueling road trips and the stress of her on-again, off-again relationship with Chris Brown, her health is beginning to buckle, again.
“Rihanna’s illness was so severe that doctors warned it could take months for her to fully recover – there were worries that she’d have to cancel her entire tour,” a source told London’s Sun tabloid.
“She loves to smoke, drink and stay up late. Her body was bound to need a break at some point. She’s now on a mission to start looking after herself,” the source claimed.
On her latest Diamonds Tour, she missed shows in Boston and Baltimore, only her second and third stops. And, she was more than an hour late for her Toronto show. On the way back into the United States, her tour buses were stopped at the border and police found marijuana on board, according to gossip site TMZ.
TheImproper reported last May that Rihanna also fell ill with the “flu,” although more likely exhaustion. She was due to appear on “Saturday Night Live” the same week.
“[Expletive] bein sick!” the singer Tweeted at the time. She posted a photo showing an IV in her arm. It was the second IV photo.
On her grueling 2010 tour in Europe, Rihanna was also briefly hospitalized for “exhaustion” and “dehydration.” But UK press reports said the Barbadian singer had been partying round-the-clock on top of performing.
During an interview last August with Oprah, the Barbadian singer appeared visibly fragile. She broke down crying more than once. “She was very emotional,” Oprah observed afterward. “She was vulnerable.”
In November, reports circulated that she was more out of control than ever since she’d gotten back with Brown. TheImproper reported that she was dwelling incessantly on their on-off relationship to the point of neglecting everything else.
“When Chris is messing her around she loses all interest in normal life,” a friend said. “She doesn’t look after herself, and she acts out. She’s always on edge, texting Chris constantly; it’s like there’s no one else in the world who she’ll listen to.”
But supporters note she is indefatigable when it comes to meeting commitments, including seven albums back-to-back in seven years, grueling tours, a slew of personal appearances and major deals with fashion brands. Which may be the problem; how much longer can she burn the candle at both ends?
